British and American English are different in many ways. The first and most obvious way is in the vocabulary.

There are hundreds of different words which are not used on the other side of the Atlantic，or which are used with a
different meaning. Some of these words are well known—Americans drive automobiles down freeways and fill up
with gas；the British drive cars along motorways and fill up with petrol. As a tourist，you will need to use the under⁃
ground in London or the subway in Now York by taxi（British）or cab（American）.

T：Hello，boys and girls. Is everybody ready to start？Before starting a new lesson，I like to ask you whether
you have ever been to Hong Kong and what difficulties you have when you are talking with people from Hong Kong.

T：Very good，Neo. You may sit down please. We can understand Hong Kong people，because they speak Can⁃
tonese and we speak mandarin（putonghua），though wee both Chinese. So，is there any difference between British
and American English？

T：Just now we talked about the difference between British and American English. Now let listen to the pas⁃
sage and find out what the passage is mainly about. Which is the first and most obvious way that British English and
American English are different？

T：As we know，the first and most obvious way that British and American English are different is in vocabu⁃
lary. Now listen to the passage again. Pay attention to the differences of word and list several different English in the
vocabulary according to the passage.

T：Now it time for our story. Here on the blackboard are some words without any connection now. I sure you
have read many stories before and I want to hear a story made by all of you. I will invite one of you to begin the story
and stop his/her at any time and invite another one to continue. In your first story you have to use the British Eng⁃

lish. And for the second story you have to use the American English.
T：Nice going!
T：English plays a more and more important role in international affairs. Sometimes，slight misunderstandings
may occur between native speakers from Great Britain and the United States. Therefore，it is necessary to know
about the differences between American English and British English. I going to give you a little quiz. Listen to
some materials with different accents，which are from VOA or BBC，and identify whether the announcersEnglish
are British or American.

T：Wee know about the two main varieties of English. What about Chinese？Work in groups and discuss the
questions：How many main varieties of Chinese are there？ In what ways are they different？ Do Chinese people
from different regions have problems understanding in each other？What do you think will happen to different Chi⁃
